A Song for July 16

Here is another high buzz from a subtly patterned sparrow. Let's compare Grasshopper (above) to LeConte's (below). The main differences are the extra buzz at the beginning of the LeConte's song and the extra tick after the LeConte's buzz. The initial ticks are variable in both species, although they should be constant for a single bird.

The species nest in different habitats. LeConte's prefers damp grasslands and sedges in the northern plains and in meadows east of there. Grasshopper is always associated with grass, but likes to sing from a small shrub or other structure more sturdy than a grass stem. This species finds the environment it needs for nesting in a great variety of grasslands and pastures throughout the U.S. and southern Canada.
